Home Security Raleigh on College Safety Tips

Via Homesecurityteam.com - It’s time to begin the new semester at college. You may have everything to furnish and decorate your room and bought your books. However, you’re not quite ready for college and dorm life until you have considered your personal security. Home security Raleigh has tips for college students:

Fire:

• Purchase a 5.00 smoke detector and a 9v battery for your room. If you can’t permanently mount it, you can double side duct tape and put it on the wall. Know where the emergency exits are to the stairwells.

• Cigarettes--have ashtrays available, and do not fall asleep with a lit cigarette. Put it in the ashtray, not your garbage can.

• Candles--don’t fall asleep with candles still burning. Don’t burn candles unless they are in an appropriate holder; don’t set a pillar or votive loose on top of your books and papers and light it; at least put a plate under it. Don’t burn candles where they can catch curtains, bedding, or the hair or clothing of anyone who walks by.

• Outlets--do not overload outlets or extension cords. Get a power strip instead.

Lock Room Doors and Windows:

• If you’re on the first floor especially, lock your room windows at night and when you’re out of the room.

• Lock your room door when you’re sleeping, when you’re showering if you have an en suite bathroom, and whenever you leave the room.

• Keep your blinds/shades drawn at night, especially when your room lights are on.

Around Campus, home security Raleigh wants you to be prepared:

• At night, go with a friend if at all possible.

• Buy a sports whistle and put it on your key ring. Carry your keys in your hand. If needed, you can blow the whistle and then use the sharp keys in your hand to defend yourself.

• Carry your cell with you and keep it on while you are walking alone. If you feel uncomfortable or feel your safety is compromised, do not call your roommate first; instead, call 911 or campus security (program in their number ahead of time).

• Walk with your head up, and walk with purpose, with a bit of an attitude. You want your head up so you can constantly be aware of your surroundings; it will appear to others, as well, that you are aware of your surroundings, and that you are aware of their presence.

• If you have your car with you at school, don’t leave valuables in plain site in the car, and do not leave the car unlocked, and do not leave windows cracked even if the car is locked. Check your back seat before you get in, and when you do get in, lock the doors.

• Keep your car keys in your hand as you walk to the car; don’t wait and fumble in your bag for them once your reach the car. If you have a remote starter for your car, use that to unlock the doors. If you see anyone approaching you in the parking lot, you can hit the red alarm button on your remote start; the car alarm will sound and the distraction may offer you the necessary time to get in the car and lock the doors.
